Back to School. Time for You!

There are a few times a year when I feel like a new beginning is upon me. The start of the calendar year, spring time, and the start of the school year.

At the time I am writing this, it is the start of the school year.  My boys went back to school last week.  For stay at home moms and working moms alike, this can be a bittersweet time.  At least for me, there is that excitement of having more time, but then also the reality that the busy routines and schedules are starting up again. As they climb in grades (8th and 5th), I am realizing just how fast time is going and before I know it they are going to be all grown up!

I get excited about these times of year.  To me, they are invitations for a fresh start.  A time for intentional change.

Over the years I have developed little rituals for these times of year and I thought, maybe just maybe, some of you might be curious as to what they are.

These are some ways I honor and love on myself at the start of the school year.

Reflect - journaling has been a part of my daily routine for some time now. This time of year, I love to go buy a pretty new journal for myself.  I usually bookend my day with journaling.  The time varies, it could be 2 minutes or 20.  I tend to include intentions, hopes, dreams, and of course, what I am grateful for.

Healthy new habit - I hear SO many people say, “at the start of the school year I will, for the New Year I will…”

This is a great time to start a new healthy habit for yourself. Or simply get back on track. Whether that be exercise, eating, self-care, whatever it is, pick something for yourself.

I myself am working on not bringing my phone into my bedroom at night, as well as not picking it up first thing and checking email and social media.  And while I am at it... for me, as my work load increases it is of utmost importance that self-care is front and center. Because when I don’t take care of myself, when I don’t fill my cup up first, I don’t have much to give anybody else.  To put it bluntly, they are getting a shitty version me.

Fall off track...the beautiful thing is we can always reset and start again.

Reconnect - after a busy summer spent with the family. I find that I can go for long periods of time and not see my friends.

This is a great time to reconnect with your gal pals.  Have lunch, meet for coffee, a spa date, whatever it is, make time to spend with your friends.

I myself did just that the first day my boys were back at school. Nice lunch with the ladies.

Go back to school - not really, unless you really want to.  I actually did that 2 years ago ;)

What are you interested in?  What lights you up?  Read a book on it, dive a little deeper. Do something for yourself.

Time for you - Make time for you. Rest and recharge.  Incorporate self-care practices into your daily routine.

Now that the kids are back in school, I have ramped this up for myself.  I am pretty much an introvert, so coming off a busy summer, I crave time for myself.  Quiet time.

So often when I ask clients what they do for self-care or what do they enjoy doing...there are more times than not a long pause.  So many women do not take enough time to care for themselves. Often feeling depleted and just going through the motions, taking care of everyone and everything.  I am not saying that you need to book a full day at the spa.  Even if you just took 10 minutes out of your day to practice self-care.  Everyone has 10 minutes. Think of all the time you spend scrolling social media in a day!  You have the time for a little self-care, my friend.

If you are at a loss and have no idea what to even do, head on over to www.meegansciretto.com/freegift for my self-care checklist.

Declutter + Organize - I am not sure why, but this time of year I get the itch to clear the clutter and get reorganize.  Maybe it is with the changing of the seasons that I get this urge, whatever it is I just go with it.

Going through closets, drawers, paperwork, clearing out things we no longer need. I don’t know about you, but I love getting rid of stuff that we don’t really use and is just taking up space.

There is something very freeing about clearing clutter.  Yes, the physical stuff, but the mental/emotional clutter as well.  Letting go of thoughts and habits that no longer serve me.

Create + Plan - Pull out your calendars or your notebooks and create the exact schedule you want. Down to every detail.  So it is there for you to see every day.

What do you want to create in the coming months?  How do you want your life to be? Set some intentions. Take some time and write it down.  Be very clear about what you truly want.

I am curious, do you change things up when your kids go back to school?  What are some things you do for yourself?  I would love to hear.

Take good care of you,
