Golden Milk – What’s All the Hype?

If you follow just about any clean-eating community, you’ve probably seen someone raving about golden milk or Instagramming photos (me included) of the frothy-yellow beverage.

As it turns out, golden milk isn’t actually new.  It’s an age old Ayurevdic beverage known as haldi doodh (turmeric milk). It has been referred to as the Ancient Health Elixir, taken to boost your health and vitality.   If you haven’t tried it, you are in for a treat.  Golden Milk is my favorite night time drink other than hot tea.  It is not only comforting, relaxing and soothing at night, it’s also extremely nutritious.  Turmeric contains loads of nutrients. Especially antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.  Another bonus is that it tastes delicious!  Turmeric has a warm, slightly spicy, bold flavor.  When mixed with a hint of sweetness it makes for a delicious night cap beverage

Most benefits of turmeric come from curcumin, which has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiseptic properties.

The health benefits of turmeric are further enhanced by adding black pepper to it.  Black pepper contains, piperine, a compound that helps the body absorb curcumin better.

BENEFITS OF GOLDEN MILK:

-really, really helps treat a nasty cold/cough
-detoxifies the body
-boosts immunity
-reduces period cramps
-reduces aches and pains (super helpful when my Lyme is acting up)
-helps with digestion
-helps with sleep
-makes skin GLOW

Now onto the recipe…

Ingredients:

2 cups almond milk or coconut milk

1 tablespoon local honey(optional)

1 tablespoon coconut oil(optional)

1 teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Small pinch of black pepper and grated ginger

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Pour all ingredients into small sauce pan and bring to boil.  Whisk to combine.  Reduce heat to low and simmer for up to 10 minutes.
  2. To serve, add honey and or a dash of cinnamon.
  3. Enjoy, warm is best!

As I mentioned, my favorite time of the day to have this is in the evening.  If it’s not your thing, or perhaps you want to ease into it.  You get the same benefits if you throw some turmeric into your morning smoothie.

Cheers!
